Dr. James Carlson’s interactive presentation “The Booming Business of Drug Testing”

  PRACS Founder and retired president, Dr. James Carlson, will be speaking on his success of being an entrepreneur after being an university professor and the path that led him to entrepreneur growth and success utilizing college students as part of his business mod e l.

The Entrepreneur Forum will be held Tuesday, March 2nd at 6:00 PM in the Idea Lab at the Ina Mae Rude Entrepreneur Center. Free visitor parking is available.

Named the Ernst & Young 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year in the Life Sciences Category, Dr. James Carlson has made a lasting impression on the Fargo and Grand Forks Communities.  Carlson founded the Pharmacology Research and Clinical Studies Institute (PRACS) in 1983 which now employees over 265 people and pays thousands of college students for their assistance.. PRACS tests generic and new medications on volunteer patients who meet study requirements and pass health inspections. PRACS is a versatile business that continuously stretches to advance further, allow for custom trial designs and find solutions to pharmaceutical product challenges.

James Carlson earned his Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Iowa and his Pharmaceutical Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan.  He began exploring the idea of a drug research institute while teaching pharmaceutical clinical courses at North Dakota State University. After the business launched and was a success at the Fargo institute, a second location was established in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. Carlson has been the President of the institute for 20 years and remains involved with pharmaceutical research. He has published over 70 articles, book chapters, abstracts, and reviews. In addition, Dr. Carlson remains involved in a variety of professional pharmaceutical organizations. His time dedicated to pharmaceutical research proves his passion for the field. He is a true and calculated entrepreneur.  Dr. Carlson received the North Dakota Business Innovator of the Year Award in 2005 from the UND Center for Innovation. Dr. Carlson is also the founding chairman of the North Dakota Bioscience Association launched in February 2010, helping growth the life sciences industry in North Dakota.

The Entrepreneur Forum is a periodic gathering of entrepreneurs and business people who share experiences, strategies, and success stories. The event is sponsored by the Center for Innovation and is open to the public.
