Dr. Maureen Clemmons

"Perseverance and Skill, Courage and Will are the leaves in Luck's 4-leaf clover" (old saying); History Channel Documentary: "Flying Pyramids, Soaring Stones"" — Maureen Clemmons

As an internationally recognized innovator with North Dakota roots, Dr. Clemmons explores an understanding of the innovation process and identifies and maps barriers and impediments to innovation. She presents the characteristics and behaviors of innovators, and identifies a course of action, which facilitates innovative ideas to fruition. Her programs provide an understanding of the process of innovation, which can provide a means to foster new ideas in social as well as commercial endeavors. The result is a model that maps the innovation process from inception to resultant learning, while understanding the forces that both enable and resist innovation.

Dr. Clemmons developed a theory on how ancient Egyptians, being sailors, built their pyramids utilizing wind energy.  She raised her first stone obelisk (3.5 tons) off the ground in 25 seconds with two guys and a kite.  Dr. Clemmons and her team from Caltech demonstrated that wind power and specially designed kites could be used to raise an 16-ton obelisk as well as transport large stones used in pyramids.   She just built a 200-ton pyramid in the Mojave Desert with 100 architecture students from Cal Poly, Pomona using wind as the force to move two-ton stones.  Dr. Clemmons work was the subject of a 2004 History Channel documentary, “Flying Pyramids, Soaring Stones.”  Like other innovators, Clemmons' unusual theory was met with intense skepticism from other experts, but her work shows that aeronautics in heavy construction is now a viable option.  Her work opened up new methods of low-cost construction in the jungles of South America.

Dr., Maureen Clemmons is the president of Transformations, an innovation and change management consulting practice in Los Angeles.  She holds a doctorate in Organization Change from Pepperdine University as well as an Executive MBA.  She has lectured at NASA, Caltech, Jet Prolusion Laboratory, Museum of Flight, and has been interviewed by NASA, the Discovery Channel, BBC, the National Geographic Society, Time Magazine, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.  Her clients include Interorbital Systems Kiteship, Taberco Inc, University de Monterrey, Mexico, MGM, Monsanto, Bausch & Lomb Surgical, Goodwill Industries, The Hazelton Foundation, Xerox, and Oce.

Both of her parents attended UND; Loering Johnson '52 BSEE and Maral Austin Johnson who encouraged her to lecture at UND.   Loering is a professional engineer, retired from industry (after 33 years), and is now in private practice.   In industry he worked on instrumentation and control design and supply for Navy nuclear-powered propulsion systems, Army nuclear-powered systems, and six commercial nuclear-powered electric power plants. His private practice has included preparation of quality assurance programs and procedures, teaching at the University of Hartford College of Engineering, and currently the authoring of on-line courses for professional engineers' license renewal requirements.  Loering and Maral reside in Connecticut." Loreing’s hometown was Belfield, ND and Maral's hometown was Bismarck, ND.

The Entrepreneur Forum is a periodic gathering of entrepreneurs and experts who share experiences, expertise, strategies, and success stories. The event is sponsored by the UND Center for Innovation and is open to the public.
